Florence, July 2015

"Oh ...... you mean that you organize this kind of event too?” Well, we do! And even though we have been in business for fifty-one, yes fifty-one, years there are still some people who are amazed by our versatility. We are a PCO, DMC, MP and EP, and if these abbreviations may not mean anything to lots of people, let’s just say that ENIC has come a long way from when we just provided services and it is thanks to that form of imprinting that we are familiar with the broadest range of fields, and are able to work in the most diverse contexts.
This newsletter, that includes our best wishes for the summer vacation – Buone Vacanze - is ample proof of our versatility.

The third edition of the Italy-wide RAEE@scuola project concluded with a press conference in Rome. RAEE@scuola is the campaign that teaches 4th and 5th grade elementary school pupils what electronic and electric wastes are and how to deal with them. The program involved nearly 56,000 children in 60 municipalities and taught them the rules for properly disposing of these wastes. "It is an experience that has reached maturity”, said Filippo Bernochi, the delegate representing the Italian Association of Municipalities “and it proves that protecting the environment is not a Utopian dream”. The children also participated in a photo contest that was posted on the web. And once again, Baz was the star of the program that will be repeated during the next school year.

China is Near is the title of an old movie, as well as an expression which – who knows why – has become a cliché. Well, China has gotten nearer for us at ENIC too. Our CEO, Stefano Gabbrielli went to Hangzhou for an site-inspection tour along with Roberto Pistolesi, secretary general of FICPI as part of the planning for the EXCO congress to be held there in 2017. From Saint Petersburg, the last 2016 venue for these congresses that we have been organizing since 1998, we will go to Hangzhou and then return to our beloved Venice at the end of 2017. We believe that we can be justly proud and honored about this international “itinerary” that began in Florence so many years ago.

EURASIA is the title of an important conference that was held in Florence this past June on the theme of Italian-Russian economic ties. Sponsored by the “Conoscere Eurasia” Association and the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum, the meeting enjoyed the support of Banca Intesa Russia whose chairman opened the session. The meeting was held in the magnificent Room of Mirrors in Palazzo Medici that was packed with representatives of all the business categories directly interested in the topic; the meeting was held one day after President Vladimir Putin visited Milan and EXPO 2015.

A very unusual and equally beautiful location, the Orto Botanico of Florence, hosted the Ferragamo Parfums spring events. Founded in 1545 to grow medicinal plants, this is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. The Florentines call it Giardino dei Semplici (medicinal herbs were known as semplici). The garden was reopened after being damaged by a tornado and this was made possible through a crowd-funding drive that is still ongoing. It is truly an enchanted place, taking up two hectares in the middle of the city, and it hosts some true curiosities such as the collection of carnivorous plants in the new greenhouses. Ferragamo Parfums chose the garden for the gala evening of their International Business Meeting and for the event held for fashion & beauty bloggers during the recent edition of Pitti Uomo.

During Pitti Uomo we were very busy with our traditional services for several events. But the one that was the most fun and most “beneficial” was definitely Ballando con il Cuore – Dancing with your Heart at the St. Regis Hotel in Florence. The evening, to benefit the Fondazione Stefano Borgonovo, the foundation dedicated to research on ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) was sponsored by the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Florence. After taking just 10 lessons, graciously offered by the dance studio, six local VIPs accepted the challenge and whirled around the dance floor under the watchful eyes of a judging panel that included. The competition was followed by an auction that raised a considerable amount thanks to the goods and services provided by generous donors and then by a thrilling dance exhibition by Raimondo Todaro and Giusy Versace, this season’s winners of the Italian Dancing with the Stars TV show, who received a well-deserved standing ovation. Giusy Versace is an inspiration to all: athlete and dancer, she lost both legs in a car accident a few years ago and bravely went on with her life wearing titanium prostheses…and winning!

The start of the second week in July marked the beginning of the European Congress of Psychology. Milan is all spruced up for EXPO and for hosting international scientific conferences like this one that welcomed 3,000 delegates from 80 countries. After the opening ceremony at the Teatro degli Arcimboldi and the presentation at the Italian Pavilion at EXPO, the congress consisted of plenary sessions, several breakdowns as well as symposia and poster sessions. The Scientific Committee chaired by Professor Gianvittorio Caprara did the massive job of preparing the scientific program while the chairman of the Organizing Committee, Dr. Mario Sellini, kept a watchful eye and a firm hand on all the issues related to such a complex congress.

"There was no certainty that they would return…but return they will!”, is what Stefano Gabbrielli remarked about the second Celebrity Fight Night in Florence , produced in cooperation with the Andrea Bocelli Foundation. The star-studded charity event held from 10 to 14 September 2014 raised 6 million dollars (2/3 to ABF - Andrea Bocelli Foundation and 1/3 to MAPC - Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center), and the red carpet that welcomed celebrities liked George Clooney, Laura Pausini, Michelle Hunzigher, Lionel Richie, Sophia Loren and Eros Ramazzotti, will be rolled out again in front of Palazzo Vecchio. Once again Florence will reveal all of its charm and open the doors to its most beautiful locations. Right now, the international guest list is classified “top secret”, but you can be sure that it will definitely match last year’s!

And so, it’s time to say Buone vacanze.......! and what better way to wish everyone a good summer if not with “our” fireworks display held on the Feast of John the Baptist, patron saint of Florence. Money was short, so a crowd-funding drive was launched, and ENIC participated with a donation – a way of giving back a little of our city gives us. “We put on the most beautiful fireworks display ever”, said Mayor Dario Nardella speaking from Palazzo Vecchio. Institutions, banks, businesses and private citizens all wanted to contribute and once again the lungarni – riverbanks – were crowded with thousands of people all enchanted by the show.
